One day I was walking at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and noticed something very interesting - nearly every person was either on their phone, in a rush, or distracted by the concerns of life. Most people were lacking presence. Unfortunately this has been the norm for many for too long. Myself included.
One day, while reading Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster, I came across the following writing, "The church Fathers often spoke of Otium Sanctum, 'holy leisure.' It refers to a sense of balance in the life, and ability to be at peace through the activities of the day, an ability to rest and take time to enjoy beauty, an ability to pace ourselves." (Foster, 27).
In a world where life is rushed, it is so important to slow down, tell our stories, and reconnect with what is most sacred.

I believe every person has a story that deserves to be held with dignity, compassion, and care.
My journey into the helping professions has been shaped by a deep interest in human flourishing, trauma recovery, faith, and the ways healing occurs within relationships and community. Through my work, education, and personal experiences, I have become increasingly convinced that people heal best when they are met with safety, curiosity, and genuine presence.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and am currently pursuing a Master of Social Work from the University of North Alabama. My professional interests include trauma recovery, nervous system regulation, spiritual abuse and religious trauma, faith and mental health integration, and whole-person wellness.
Otium Sanctum Counseling & Wellness began as a vision for creating spaces where healing and restoration can take place. The name, which means "Holy Leisure" or "Sacred Rest," reflects my belief that meaningful growth often begins when we are given permission to slow down, tell our stories honestly, and encounter grace in the process.
My hope is that Otium Sanctum will continue to grow into a place where individuals, families, churches, and communities can find support, healing, and renewed hope.
Thank you for being here.
Every person possesses inherent worth and deserves to have their story honored with compassion, respect, and care.
I believe people grow best when they are met with trust, respect, and a sense of emotional and relational safety.
I value creating spaces where people can show up honestly, embrace who they are, and be met without judgment.
I believe healing, growth, and flourishing happen most effectively through meaningful partnerships and shared effort.
